About Ogham Jewellery — Hazel’s Story
Almost thirty years ago, a woman and her brother opened a little shop on Rose Street in the heart of Edinburgh. They started out selling Belgian chocolates — but it was the jewellery that stole their hearts, and before long the chocolates were gone and the display cases were filled with the most beautiful Celtic and Scottish designs they could find.
Rose Street in those days was alive with tourists from every corner of the world, and Hazel quickly discovered something that would shape everything that followed — people who are far from home hunger for a connection to where they came from. A Celtic ring, a Scottish thistle pendant, a piece made by a craftsperson in Orkney or Shetland — these weren’t just pretty things. They were pieces of home to carry with you.
Hazel went on to open her own shop in Ayr, and for years her husband worked alongside her, sharing the long days and the joy of matching the right piece of jewellery to the right person. When he passed away fourteen years ago, Hazel kept going — because the business was not just a livelihood, it was a love story with Scottish craftsmanship that she wasn’t ready to end.
At its peak the shop had seven members of staff. Hazel knew every designer personally, understood every piece in the cases, and wrapped every order with the kind of care that only comes from genuinely loving what you do.
When the high street began to empty and the footfall dwindled to almost nothing, closing the Ayr shop last year was one of the hardest decisions of her life. But not for a moment did she consider giving up entirely.
Because here’s something you might not know. Hazel has been selling online since before most people knew what online shopping was. Before social media. Before delivery tracking. Before there were even proper baskets to put things in. She was there at the very beginning, finding ways to bring Scottish and Celtic jewellery to people who needed it — and she’s still here now, at 78, doing exactly the same thing.
That’s not something many people can say. The internet has changed beyond recognition. The high street has come and largely gone. Retail has been turned upside down more times than anyone can count. And through all of it, Hazel has adapted, learned, kept going, and never stopped caring about the jewellery or the people buying it.
Today Ogham Jewellery is very much a family affair. Hazel remains the heart of the business — packing every order personally, answering every question, choosing every piece with the same passion she had on Rose Street all those years ago. Her son Jonnie, who built the very first version of this website, is now getting ready to carry the business forward into its next chapter. And Michael, who worked in the shop for years and still knows every designer and every collection inside out, is never far away when his expertise is needed.
Two generations of knowledge. One family. And a shared belief that beautiful jewellery, made by skilled craftspeople in Scotland, deserves to find its way to the people who will treasure it most — wherever in the world they happen to be.
Every order is packed personally by Hazel, placed in a beautiful presentation box, and sent on its way with a little something extra — a few sweetheart sweets, because she has always believed that buying jewellery should feel like a celebration, not just a transaction.
